Please come join Ron Carter, the Strand’s theatre organist on Sunday afternoon, May 20th 3pm beginning with a organ pop’s preshow and sing-a-long by Phillip Allen, organist at Marietta’s First Baptist Church at 2:30pm pm. THE EAGLE stars 1920′s heart throb Rudolph Valentino and co-stars Vilma Banky and Lousie Dresser. THE EAGLE was released in 1925 only a year prior to Valentino’s death in August of 1926.

THE EAGLE tells the story of Valdimir Dubrovsky (Valentino) who, as an officer in the Russian army and the favorite of Czarina Catherine the Great (Loiuse Dresser), rejects the notion of becoming a consort of the Czarina. He learns that his family’s lands have been taken from them and his father has been killed. Donning a disguise, Dubrovsky, now the Eagle, sets out to punish the man responsible for his father’s death and retrieve his family’s property. His quest for revenge becomes complicated when he falls in love with the daughter of the man who killed his father!

Rudolph Valentino was a sex symbol of the 1920′s and was known as the “Latin Lover”. His sudden death at age 31 caused mass hysteria among his female fans and over 100,000 people lined the streets of New York City to pay respects at his funeral.

In addition to the film Rachel Schildgen, silent film buff, and an ardent admirer of Vilma Banky, will display over 100 vintage photographs of her (Valentino’s love interest in the film) in the Strand lobby.

STONES MUSIC ROCKS THE STRAND

Hitting The Strand stage on May 18^th as part of the 2012 Music Series will be The Jagged Stones, a tribute to The Rolling Stones with acclaimed vocalist and Jagger look-alike Skip Stephens.

The Jagged Stones put on a show that teems with the same unbridled spirit and raw energy that made The Rolling Stones the iconic act it is today. Fans will be satisfied with the pout, preen and raunchy riff they’d expect, bringing the entertainment level of an over-the-top arena show up close and personal in The Strand’s 500-seat theatre.

The show includes Stones classics such as “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, “Satisfaction”, “Start Me Up”, and “Brown Sugar”, and die-hard fans will be equally satisfied to hear deeper cuts making their way into the set list.

Skip Stephens as Mick Jagger, looks, acts, and sounds the part in addition to being a fantastic sax player, injecting a blast of brass into the show. The rest of the band is an arsenal of top-notch, seasoned musicians (Barry Zion, David Lang, Eddie Brodeur, Joel Edwards, & Martin Abbott) who painstakingly recreate each note of this time-honored music.

FIRST ANNUAL STRAND CALL-A-THON 12 HOURS, 1 GOAL

The Earl Smith Strand Theatre will be kicking off its 2012 fundraising campaign with The First Annual Strand Call-a-thon on May 16^th, a 12 hour fundraising event complete with an open house and live entertainment. The goal is to raise $50,000 in one 12 hour push.

Members of the Friends of The Strand Board will be manning the phone bank on The Strand stage from 9am to 9pm, while performance sets from local artists take place in front of them at the top of every hour. The event will be free and open to the public and will also be broadcast live over the internet at www.ustream.tv/channel/strand-theatre.

The money raised by First Annual Strand Call-a-thon will go towards the Friends of The Strand’s Capital Campaign. This campaign covers the renovation and construction costs of re-opening The Strand in 2009. Thanks to conservative budgeting and support from the community, the Capital Campaign is on track to retire the renovation construction loan within the next few years. The First Annual Strand Call-a-thon will be the first event in a 2012 fundraising push to support The Strand’s continued success.

Performing at the Call-a-thon will be local artists including Dustin Barclay, Chad Yochum, Travis Cottle, Ron Carter, Daniel Hilton, Allison Michalke, and more. Performances are 15-20 minutes at the top of the hour. The entire Strand facility will be open all day for patrons to tour the facility and drop in the auditorium to watch the performances.

New care planning service opens its doors to local seniors and their families

Serving Seniors, a new geriatric care management practice, recently opened its doors to seniors and their families in north metro Atlanta.

“Good planning and decisions affect the quality of life and level of independence of a dear parent. Serving Seniors guides and supports family caregivers,” explained founder Rev. Dr. Rick Carlton, who has been serving seniors since 1999. His passion for seniors and their caregivers stems from his career as a pastor and a volunteer Hospice chaplain.

People who have lived independently and self-reliantly for years eventually experience life changes that require a helping hand. Much of the time, seniors in this situation do not want to burden family members. That’s where Serving Seniors comes in to help them plan and arrange for care in keeping with their own goals for life.

“More often than not, we hear from a loving adult child – typically a caring daughter – who first begins to recognize the need for help, and either does not know where to start, or lives out of town, or lacks time due to business and family commitments, so she calls us,” Carlton said.

In Home Evaluation, Care Plan and Proposal

Serving Seniors’ first step is a professional in-home evaluation. Next, the firm provides a written care plan on what is needed for the senior to continue living a quality, independent life in a cost effective way. The proposal offers suggested services which might include helping with medical or in-home personal care. A client’s family may choose to carry out all or a few of the needed services and contract Serving Seniors to arrange for technical tasks or whatever the family lacks time or expertise to perform.

Specific solutions outlined in the care plan could include making medical appointments; providing transportation to appointments; communicating with medical personnel to understand the health care plan; and arranging to get meds or support keeping the meds on schedule.

Such consultation brings them professional guidance to geriatric care planning as it relates to the goods and services they provide for aging clients, and can even provide expert, on-site assistance to collect information or deliver needed support services.

Hill Park

Calling for volunteers of all ages to come out and assist Marietta Tree Keepers as we maintain Hill Park on Saturday, May 12, 2012. Hill Park is a pretty little pocket park that was transformed from a once vacant lot just a few blocks off the northeast corner of Historic Marietta Square. The park was recently dedicated to the memory of Willie Hill, deacon of Zion Baptist Church.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at 8:30am to enjoy donuts and beverages before digging in to work. All ages are welcome to the family-friendly event. Dress appropriately for the weather. Tools will be provided although volunteers are welcome to bring their favorite outdoor gloves and tools if they like.

Members of the Marietta Tree Keepers have been promoting the value of trees to the community since it was founded in 2002. MTK has over 100 members and has planted over 2,500 trees around the city. The 501(C)3 non-profit organization works closely with the City of Marietta to plant trees along public right-of-ways, parks and schools. DISCO NIGHT PUBLIC DANCE PARTY ON THE STRAND STAGE

Patrons will take a giant step back in time to the days of Saturday Night Fever and party the night away to a live DJ and funky disco beats on the stage-turned-dance floor. There will be both a disco dance contest and ‘70s costume contest. Free Hustle lessons will be held in the 2^nd floor event for those patrons who want to brush up their dancing skills. The fourth floor terrace bar will also be open.

Judging the costume contest will be Linda Flournoy and Debbie Butler. Judging the dance contest will be Judy Renfroe, Shelby Bodiford, and Allison Michalke. For both the dance and costume contest: first place winners will receive a free rental of The Strand’s 2^nd floor event room, second place winners with receive a custom engraved brick under The Strand’s marquee, and third place winners will receive a $25 gift certificate to the concessions stand/bar.

Cover charge is $10 and attendants must be 21 and older with proper IDs. Cover can be purchased in advance to reserve admission through The Strand Box Office.

Certified arborists, forester and landscape architects will lead the tour of the neighborhood, pointing out the many treasures and challenges that exist among our valuable stock of trees. The experts will offer practical advice as to how we can extend the life of our mature trees and how we can plan for their eventual replacement. The experts will discuss overhead utilities, proper pruning, protecting root systems and selecting the right specimen for the right location.

Do you love to garden but are disappointed with your results? Maybe you’re a beginner and lack basic knowledge, or an experienced gardener looking for more challenging projects. Do you want to learn more from the experts about specific plants and techniques that work in Marietta? Then this workshop series is for you. The Marietta Council of Garden Clubs, Inc., is proud to introduce our 2011 series of Horticulture Workshops. These workshops are for the avid gardener new to gardening or experienced. Each workshop will include a presentation by 1-3 presenters that specialize in the specific topic either well known or professional. The Saturday begins at 8:30am for registration, 9:00-11:00 for the formal presentation, a break for lunch (which is included) and then a private tour of a local garden or nursery. Some of the locations will have plants for sale. The workshops will be held once a month at the Marietta Educational Garden Center, 505 Kennesaw Ave, Marietta, GA, 30060. These workshops are a great way to improve your gardening skills and meet others interested in gardening.

The March 24, 2012 will be Jim Rodgers, nursery owner and plant propagator of Nearly Native Nursery and then we will tour the Nearly Native Nursery in Fayetteville. The April 28, 2012 speaker will be Sue Dean, Cobb Master Gardener and Container Designer and then we will tour the Lost Mountain Nursery.

In 1949, The Marietta Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. was formed to coordinate the interests of the Garden Clubs of Cobb County; to bring them into close relations for mutual helpfulness by association, conference and correspondence; to promote the love of gardening; to promote the study of horticulture; to protect our native trees, wild flowers and birds; and to encourage civic beautification, conservation and pollution control. Originally seven Garden Clubs were represented by the Council. At present, there are 21 Garden Clubs representing 651 members. The Council, along with the Board of Trustees, comprise the Marietta Educational Garden Center, Inc. which is located in an antebellum home at 505 Kennesaw Avenue in Marietta, GA. The Council sponsors two standard flower shows every year at the North Georgia State Fair, has ongoing horticulture classes or flower design classes at the Center; and through it’s Clubs participates in beautification projects throughout Cobb County.

The Vegas Show Coming to the Strand

Who ever said what happens in Vegas HAS to stay in Vegas? Board an imaginary plane and travel to the city of shows this March as The Strand brings Vegas to Marietta to benefit the Humane Society of Cobb County and The Earl Smith Strand Theatre.

Boarding MARI-GA (a compound of Marietta, GA) Airlines, audience members will enjoy two fun-filled acts of sheer sensory overload and over-the-top glitz as they “fly” into Sin City. Featuring showgirls, singers, dancers, and musical tribute to Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, the Temptations, and many other Vegas legends, The Vegas Show is a high-energy, non-stop variety show showcasing the talent of local performers. Also included with the Vegas legends are modern pop tributes to artists such as Justin Bieber and Madonna.

“Las Vegas is famous for promoting excess and amazing acts, and this is clearly reflected in the cast,” said Catherine Rhodes, musical director of Vegas. “This is the first full music production I have been involved with here at The Strand and it’s the perfect vehicle to showcase the talent of the community.”

The Vegas Show is the first of four live musical theatre travelogues to destinations in the USA. Future possibilities are Broadway and New York City, Hollywood and the movies, Nashville and county music.
