Marietta reads – Reading Bowl Competition 2011
Once again the Rotary Club of Marietta has sponsored this annual reading event. The reading bowl involves all elementary schools in the Marietta City School System. Preparations are arduous with each Reading Bowl Team committing to reading over 30 books for the competition. The Rotary Club provided all the Team Trophies, Bowl Competition Reading Medal- lions, and Reading Bowl Certificates for all participants. Club President Mark Barbour moderated the competition held at Marietta Junior High School. The Rotary Club of Marietta is a local service organization that is part of Rotary International. Marietta, GA – Marietta City Schools (MCS) kindergarten registration for the 2011-2012 school year begins Feb. 7 and ends Feb. 11, 2011. Registration hours at all MCS elementary schools are from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A complete listing of Marietta City elementary schools is available at www.marietta-city.org/schools/. To schedule an elementary school tour, contact the school office. MCS attendance zones determine school assignments for all elementary students. School Board Issues Makeup Schedules
Education City of Marietta At their Tuesday, Jan. 18 meeting, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved the Superintendent’s recommendation, in a vote of 7:0, to require Marietta City Schools’ students to makeup the equivalent of four of the five school days missed last week due to severe winter weather school closures. All students are required to attend school March 14 and 15, and the class day will be extended by one hour Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, March 7 to 11, and March 14 to 16. Cobb County Schools garner awards for academic success
Thirty-five Cobb County schools have been honored for academic success by the Georgia Department of Education and the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. The awards are based on student performance on the 2009-10 Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT, for elementary and middle schools) and the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT, for high schools). These state assessments help determine a school’s status under federal No Child Left Behind. Each award has four honor levels – Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze – that correspond to a school’s consistent performance and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status. The Greatest Gains award is given to schools that showed the greatest improvement in CRCT or GHSGT scores and had a significant percentage of students exceeding standards.
