Glover Park fountain to undergo restoration
2/21/2011
The popular fountain at the center of Glover Park on the Marietta Square will be removed the week of February 21 for a complete restoration.
Robinson Iron, the original manufacturer, will transport the fountain to Alabama for 4-6 weeks so the internal and external parts can be fully restored. The fountain will return to the Square by the first week of April, in time for the many popular events and activities that gear up at the end of the month.
Citizens who watched with interest as the fountain was painted last year might wonder why it is being removed now. “While preparing the fountain for operation now that the weather has warmed, the staff cleaning the upper bowl noticed significant movement that had not been present before,” Rich Buss, director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities, said. “After removing the upper bowl it turned out the fountain was rusting from the inside out, a condition that wasn’t visible during last year’s painting.”
In addition to ensuring the safe operation of the fountain, the aesthetics will be much improved, Buss said.
