A grand old tree is no accident, Marietta Tree Keepers plant on purpose!
Trees are really cool, literally. They are cool to look at and they produce shade which helps keep things cool in the summer. They do cool things to reduce pollution and control water runoff. And when it’s cool outside, it’s the perfect time to plant them.
It’s during this time of year when Marietta Tree Keepers (MTK) is busy hosting planting events to get trees in the ground. For the hundred plus volunteers that make up the organization, it’s a great time to get out of the house and take in some fresh air, exercise and good vibrations, while making a big difference to the local environment.
Since 2002, MTK has planted over 2500 trees in and around the City of Marietta. The group was formed by ordinary people concerned about the loss of trees due to construction and development. For the most part, MTK plants trees on public land in cooperation with the City of Marietta government. The group also hosts events to help residents learn how to properly plant and maintain trees on private property.
MTK hosts planting events once a month on Saturday mornings in the winter months. Tools and gloves are provided along with guidance from some of the area’s leading experts on trees. There’s even hot drinks and snacks. Kids are always welcome but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
While it’s always fun to plant trees, the best part is the satisfaction of making an immediate difference to the environment. You will be able to see the results of your efforts for years to come.
Grand old trees don’t just happen by accident. Many of them were planted on purpose by residents in an era long before air conditioning. Today these trees are slowly disappearing. It’s time for us to plant again and you can be a part of that.
